The re-election of Donald Trump as U.S. president has sent shockwaves through Hollywood, with numerous celebrities expressing their frustration and disbelief over the outcome. Despite a star-studded campaign in support of Kamala Harris, featuring figures like BeyoncĂ©, Jennifer Lopez, and Bruce Springsteen, Trump’s victory has sparked a wave of disappointment among many in the entertainment industry.
Director Adam McKay, known for his work on Don’t Look Up, criticized the Democratic Party’s approach, particularly over the handling of Joe Biden’s cognitive health and key policy issues such as healthcare. McKay tweeted, "Who would have guessed lying about Biden’s cognitive health for 2 years, refusing to do an open convention for a new nominee, never mentioning public healthcare & embracing fracking, the Cheneys & a year-long slaughter of children in Gaza wouldn’t be a winning strategy?" He later added, “It is time to abandon the Dem Party.”
Rapper Cardi B, who had previously supported Harris, shared her anger on Instagram with a video captioned, “I hate y’all bad,” and expressed her frustration with the election outcome during an Instagram Live, saying, “Burn your fucking hats, motherfucker. I’m really sad.”
Oscar-winning actress Jamie Lee Curtis wrote on Instagram that the result marked “a return to a more restrictive, some fear draconian time,” warning that minority groups would be more fearful under a Trump administration. She urged Americans to “fight for women and our children and their futures” and continue to protest against what she saw as a rising tide of tyranny.
Actor John Cusack, a longtime vocal critic of Trump, slammed the result, calling it “a sign of deep nihilism” and describing the re-elected president as a “convicted felon rapist and Nazi.”
Christina Applegate, star of Dead to Me, expressed concern over the impact of the election on women's rights, writing, “My child is sobbing because her rights as a woman may be taken away.” Billie Eilish also spoke out, calling the result “a war on women.” Ariana Grande shared similar sentiments on Instagram, offering support to those affected by the outcome.
Other stars, like Viola Davis, praised Harris for her courage and commitment to the country. Meanwhile, Wendell Pierce, known for his role in The Wire, congratulated Harris on her campaign but warned that the re-election of Trump would have long-lasting consequences, particularly in shaping the Supreme Court for generations to come.
Authors and public figures also joined the chorus of disappointment. Stephen King compared the fragility of democracy to delicate objects, writing, “Once you break it, then it’s sold.” Duncan Jones, director of Moon, shared his pessimism, feeling that people had overestimated the goodness in others. Meanwhile, singer Ethel Cain offered a harsh message to Trump supporters, hoping that they would one day face the consequences of their votes.
On The View, Whoopi Goldberg, a longtime Trump critic, declared, “He’s the president. I’m still not going to say his name.” Co-host Sunny Hostin expressed being “profoundly disturbed” by the election results.
British author Philip Pullman succinctly stated, “Goodbye, America. It was nice knowing you,” summing up the feelings of many who felt disillusioned by the outcome.
As Trump prepares to take office for another term, the entertainment world remains vocal in its disappointment and calls for continued activism and resistance.
