Gisèle Pelicot, a French woman who bravely demanded a public trial against her ex-husband and 50 other men accused of her assault, has become an international feminist symbol. Pelicot has worn a silk scarf to court, sent by an Australian organization that supports older women who have experienced sexual violence, symbolizing global solidarity in the fight against abuse.
Speaking outside the court in Avignon, where she is confronting the trauma of a decade-long ordeal, Pelicot said she was “honored to wear it.” Her lawyer, Stéphane Babonneau, added, “The scarf is a testament to the global bond uniting women against violence. It shows that even women as far as Australia stand in support of her courage.”
The court proceedings revealed how Pelicot’s former husband, Dominique, allegedly drugged her food over several years, allowing multiple men to assault her without her knowledge. Among the accused is Romain V, a former forklift operator who allegedly raped Pelicot multiple times in 2019 and 2020 while she was unconscious. Video footage presented in court shows Romain V smiling as Pelicot lay unresponsive. In his defense, he cited her husband’s permission, despite video evidence of her unconsciousness.
Yumi Lee, of the Australian Older Women’s Network, shared that she and others sent the scarf as a message of solidarity. “We wish we could be there, holding signs that read, ‘We believe you, Gisèle’ and ‘You are our champion,’” she said. The scarf, crafted by First Nations women, represents the collective strength and support of women worldwide, said Lee.
Pelicot’s bravery has not only inspired local support but has also united women globally. Testimonies from women in countries like the U.S., U.K., Brazil, and across Europe have poured in, resonating with Pelicot’s message of resilience and refusal to accept shame for others’ crimes.
Lee further emphasized the impact of Pelicot’s stance: “She has pushed boundaries on discussions of shame, violence, and consent. Gisèle is truly a champion. We hope she knows that women across the globe are standing with her.” As Pelicot pursues justice, her resilience continues to inspire and mobilize a worldwide movement.
