Vinícius Júnior Discovers Ancestral Ties to Cameroon’s Tikar Tribe Through DNA Test

Brazilian football sensation Vinícius Júnior, who plays for Real Madrid, has uncovered a connection to the Tikar tribe of Cameroon through a DNA test conducted by the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) in partnership with AfricanAncestry.com.

The test results were officially revealed on November 19, 2024, during a ceremony held at Fonte Nova Stadium, just ahead of Brazil’s World Cup qualifier against Uruguay. Vinícius was presented with a certificate confirming his heritage, accompanied by his father, Vinícius José Paixão de Oliveira, and CBF President Ednaldo Rodrigues.

Speaking at the ceremony, Rodrigues emphasized the significance of recognizing Brazil’s Afro-Brazilian roots.
“To celebrate Vini Jr. is to celebrate the success of all Brazilians. By knowing his origins, we reaffirm our commitment to an inclusive society, recognizing the fundamental role of Afro-Brazilian culture in shaping our national identity and global football achievements,” Rodrigues stated.

Gina Paige, founder and president of AfricanAncestry.com, highlighted the historical and emotional weight of such discoveries for individuals of African descent.
“Vini Jr. carries the desire to honor his heritage. Like many of African descent, his ancestral story was erased by the scars of racism and slavery. Reconnecting him with his roots in the Tikar tribe of Cameroon is a profound act of resistance, aligning with his advocacy for social justice,” Paige remarked

Vinícius’ father expressed pride and gratitude for uncovering their lineage.
“It’s important for us to know where we come from. Many Brazilians lack knowledge of their ancestry. I’m happy to learn that we share a connection with Cameroon,” he said.

Vinícius Júnior has been vocal in addressing racism and promoting social justice throughout his career. His discovery not only strengthens his personal identity but also highlights the deep historical ties between Brazil and Africa, reinforcing the cultural and ancestral connections that transcend borders.
