Bashar al-Assad Reported to Have Fled Syria as Rebels Claim Capture of Damascus

 

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad is reported to have fled the country following a rapid offensive by rebel forces that led to the fall of Damascus after just 11 days of intense fighting. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights and several senior officers confirmed that Assad departed the capital, though the exact details of his whereabouts remain unclear, with speculation pointing to his departure via Damascus airport as security forces abandoned their posts.

The offensive, led by Islamist insurgents, swiftly dismantled Assad’s regime, which had been in power for over five decades. Rebel groups announced the fall of Damascus on state television, declaring the end of Assad's 24-year authoritarian rule.
