DeSantis Accused of Hypocrisy Over Swift Action to Fill Republican House Seats

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has come under fire for his swift action in scheduling primaries to fill vacant Republican House seats, with critics accusing him of hypocrisy. The governor’s decision to quickly set primaries for two solidly Republican districts, following the resignations of Representatives Matt Gaetz and Mike Waltz due to appointments in Donald Trump’s administration, has raised eyebrows, especially in light of his delayed response to a similar situation in 2021.

DeSantis set the primaries for January 28 and April 1, just days after Waltz’s resignation takes effect, but his critics point out that he left voters in the Democratic-held 20th Congressional District waiting for over nine months after the death of Representative Alcee Hastings in April 2021. This prolonged vacancy led to a seven-month delay in setting a primary, with the special election not taking place until January 2022.

Nikki Fried, the chair of the Florida Democratic Party, called DeSantis' actions “hypocritical,” emphasizing the stark contrast in how quickly he moved to fill Republican seats versus his inaction in filling the Democratic-held seat. Fried also raised concerns over DeSantis’ restrictive mail-in voting laws, which could disadvantage voters in the newly scheduled special elections, as many may be unaware that their mail-in ballot registrations need to be renewed by December 31.

Political analysts argue that DeSantis is playing political games to shore up the fragile Republican majority in the U.S. House. Nicholas Seabrook, a political scientist, noted that DeSantis has consistently pushed the limits of his power to benefit the Republican agenda, suggesting that the timing of these elections is strategically aimed at ensuring that the House seats are filled quickly to avoid any disruption in the GOP’s legislative priorities.

Beyond the political maneuvering, there are whispers that DeSantis may be positioning himself for a future national role, potentially as a member of the Trump administration. With speculation mounting about his ambitions, particularly in regard to a possible cabinet position, DeSantis' swift actions in these special elections appear to be part of a broader strategy to maintain his relevance on the national stage.

While DeSantis’ office has not commented on the matter, his critics remain vocal in their accusations that his rush to fill these seats is more about political convenience than any genuine concern for the voters in these districts.
