A wave of mysterious drone sightings has sparked concern across New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania, prompting an FBI investigation into the unusual activity. Since mid-November, residents in several New Jersey counties have reported spotting clusters of drones, with sightings recently expanding to parts of New York, including Staten Island, and Philadelphia.
Locals have shared footage of the drones online, showing what appears to be groups of unmanned aerial vehicles in the sky. The Federal Bureau of Investigation's Newark office has acknowledged the sightings and is actively investigating, seeking any additional information from the public. "Witnesses have spotted clusters of what appear to be drones, as well as possibly a fixed-wing aircraft," the FBI said in a statement. The agency also revealed that it had received reports from both the public and law enforcement over the past several weeks.
To ensure safety and security, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has imposed temporary flight restrictions in areas surrounding Picatinny Arsenal military base and Trump National Golf Club Bedminster. Despite the heightened awareness, authorities have stated that, as of now, there is no known threat to public safety.
New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy addressed the situation on social media, reassuring residents that the state's government is closely monitoring the drone activity. He mentioned that his office has been in communication with federal partners, including the Department of Homeland Security, to investigate the matter. "There is no known threat to the public at this time," Murphy said.
As the investigation continues, local leaders have expressed concerns about the drones’ presence. A group of 20 mayors in Morris County, New Jersey, sent a letter to Governor Murphy requesting a thorough investigation and improved communication with the public and law enforcement. They highlighted the growing alarm among residents and officials over the drones, particularly as they have been seen flying near critical infrastructure like water reservoirs, electric transmission lines, and police departments.
In response to reports of drones flying over Staten Island, Congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis has urged the FAA to implement temporary drone flight restrictions in the area. She also called for briefings from Homeland Security and the FBI. The situation has taken a troubling turn after drones reportedly interfered with a medical helicopter’s ability to respond to a car crash in New Jersey, raising further concerns about the potential for disruption.
While local law enforcement officials, including Florham Park Police Chief Joseph Orlando, have emphasized that there is no evidence the drones pose an immediate threat, they remain deeply concerned about their proximity to sensitive locations. The police have called for vigilance from the public, urging residents to report any sightings directly to the FBI.
As the investigation continues, authorities are working to determine the origin and purpose of the mysterious drones, with many local officials calling for greater transparency and answers to ease growing public unease.
