The wrestling world is mourning the loss of Rey Misterio Sr., a legendary figure in Mexican Lucha Libre, who passed away at the age of 66.
The news of his death was shared by his son, El Hijo de Rey Misterio (Miguel Aarón López Hernández), on Facebook on Friday, December 20. The post read:
"Friends and family, I regret to inform you that my Father, Miguel Ángel López Días, Rey Misterio Sr., passed away this morning...I will keep you informed. Thank you."
No cause of death has been disclosed at this time.
Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide, a prominent Mexican wrestling company, issued a heartfelt statement to honor the late icon:
"We mourn the sensitive passing of Miguel Ángel López Días, known as Rey Misterio Sr. We send our deepest condolences to your loved ones and lift our prayers to heaven for your eternal rest."
Rey Misterio Sr. was not only a celebrated wrestler but also the uncle of WWE superstar Rey Mysterio and the father of fellow wrestler Dominik Mysterio, who reacted to the news by sharing a somber black heart emoji alongside photos of his late father on Instagram.
Rey Misterio Sr., whose real name was Miguel Ángel López Días, began his career in the ring in 1976 after initially training as a boxer. Over the decades, he became a pivotal figure in the wrestling world, earning multiple championship titles, including the Revolution Tag Team Championship (with his son), the IWC World Middleweight Championship, and the WWA World Junior Light Heavyweight Championship.
The wrestling legend's passing comes just weeks after the death of his brother, Roberto Gutierrez, on November 17 at the age of 76, adding to the family's grief.
Known for his high-flying maneuvers and charismatic presence, Rey Misterio Sr. inspired countless wrestlers and fans worldwide. His contributions to Lucha Libre established him as a cornerstone of the sport and a mentor to many, including his nephew Rey Mysterio, who has carried on the family legacy in WWE.
