A 30-year-old American woman, Liliana Goodson, has been sentenced to 12 months in jail after attempting to bring a gold-plated pistol into Australia, claiming it was for her protection.
Goodson pleaded guilty to charges of illegally importing an unauthorized firearm and ammunition. The Sydney Downing Centre local court handed down the sentence on Monday, requiring her to serve at least four months in full-time custody.
The arrest occurred in April 2023 at Sydney Airport, where customs officials discovered the 24-carat gold-plated pistol, valued at approximately $3,000, concealed in her luggage. Goodson was en route to Australia to attend clown school and told authorities she carried the weapon for self-defense.
During questioning at the airport, Goodson initially denied having prohibited items but changed her statement when confronted about the firearm. “Oh yeah, I forgot about that,” she reportedly said.
Evidence presented in court revealed that Goodson had searched online for information about carrying a gun in her luggage. A calendar reminder on her phone noted to "put gun in suitcase," contradicting her claims of forgetfulness.
Magistrate Susan Horan emphasized the seriousness of the offense, stating that Australia maintains strict regulations against firearms. “There is a strong need to deter others from committing similar offenses, which can only be achieved through incarceration,” she said.
Prosecutors highlighted the intimidating appearance of the weapon, noting it could cause alarm in the community. Goodson admitted she had no intention of using the gun and was “scared” of firing it, hoping its presence alone would deter potential threats.
Goodson’s past behavior was also scrutinized during the trial, with evidence showing she had used psychedelic drugs, synthetic cannabis, and methamphetamine in recent years.
Following the sentencing, Goodson was immediately taken into custody, where she removed her jewelry before being handcuffed and led from the courtroom.
Australia’s firm stance against unauthorized firearms reflects the nation’s commitment to community safety, with this case serving as a warning to others who might consider similar actions.
