Liz Cheney Condemns Trump's Remarks as an 'Assault on Rule of Law'

Former Republican Congresswoman Liz Cheney has strongly criticized President-elect Donald Trump’s recent statements suggesting imprisonment for members of the January 6 House committee, calling it an attack on the rule of law and the foundational principles of the United States.

In a Sunday interview on NBC’s Meet the Press, Trump accused Cheney and her colleagues on the bipartisan panel of destroying evidence related to the investigation into the 2021 Capitol attack. Without providing evidence, he labeled the committee members as "political thugs" and "creeps," asserting they "should go to jail."

Cheney responded forcefully, stating in a statement obtained by The New York Times that Trump's accusations were unfounded and unconstitutional. “There is no conceivably appropriate factual or constitutional basis for what Donald Trump is suggesting,” she said, adding that any attempt to use the Justice Department to target the committee members would constitute sanctionable misconduct by legal professionals.

The Wyoming Republican, who lost her congressional seat after her vocal criticism of Trump, accused him of attempting to undermine democracy by inciting an "angry mob" to overturn the 2020 election results. She described the events of January 6 as “the worst breach of our Constitution by any president in our nation’s history.”

Cheney, the daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney, further warned that Trump’s rhetoric is part of an ongoing assault on democratic institutions. “Donald Trump’s suggestion that members of Congress who later investigated his illegal and unconstitutional actions should be jailed is a continuation of his assault on the rule of law and the foundations of our republic,” she stated.

The remarks come amid reports that President Joe Biden is contemplating broad pardons for individuals who may become targets of Trump’s promised retribution against his political adversaries during his second term.

Although prosecutions related to the Capitol attack have reportedly been dropped following Trump’s November 5 election victory over Vice President Kamala Harris, Cheney emphasized the importance of preserving evidence gathered by Special Counsel Jack Smith. She urged the release of as much information as possible in the special counsel’s forthcoming report.

Cheney’s comments highlight the persistent tensions between Trump and members of the Republican Party who opposed his actions following the 2020 election, as the nation remains deeply divided over the legacy of the January 6 insurrection.
