A tense and frightening active shooter situation has been reported at Emory University in Atlanta, causing widespread alarm on campus and in the surrounding area. Students and staff were quickly instructed to follow the "run, hide, fight" protocol as police swarmed the university grounds in response to multiple reports of gunfire.
The initial reports centered around gunshots fired near the CVS pharmacy located on campus, which is notably close to the headquarters of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Employees at a nearby deli, General Muir’s, described hearing a series of gunshots that resembled fireworks going off repeatedly, indicating a rapid succession of shots.
Authorities responded with overwhelming force. A reporter from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution on the scene witnessed over 50 police vehicles and officers clad in tactical gear, many carrying rifles, securing the campus. The Atlanta Police Department confirmed via social media at 5:30 p.m. Eastern Time that they were actively responding to the reported shooting and urged residents and commuters to avoid the area for their safety.
Although the exact number of victims remains unknown, and no confirmed injuries have been reported so far, the situation caused significant disruption and fear. Emory University initially placed the campus on lockdown and issued a shelter-in-place order, which was lifted around 6:30 p.m. ET. However, police activity remained ongoing in the Emory Point area, and the university continued to warn people to avoid the location.
Political leaders and public officials expressed their concern following the incident. Georgia Republican Representative Mike Collins urged students to take cover and offered prayers for a quick resolution, while Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr condemned the violence and prayed for the safety of the entire Emory community.
This incident highlights the ongoing challenges of campus safety and the importance of rapid response protocols in crisis situations. Authorities continue to investigate the shooting and work to ensure the safety of students, staff, and residents in the area.
