A Louisiana man will spend the rest of his life in prison after admitting to a horrifying crime spree that left a mother and her young daughter dead, and another child traumatized.
On Wednesday, 37-year-old Daniel Callihan pleaded guilty to federal charges of kidnapping resulting in death and transporting a minor across state lines for sexual purposes. The plea deal spares him from the death penalty, but he still faces mandatory life in prison plus a possible $500,000 fine.
Prosecutors say Callihan murdered 35-year-old Callie Brunett in her Loranger mobile home on June 12, 2024, stabbing her more than 50 times. He then kidnapped her two daughters — 6-year-old “Minor Victim 1” and 4-year-old Erin Brunett — and drove to Mississippi, where he picked up his girlfriend and alleged accomplice, Victoria Cox. Authorities say both adults sexually abused the 6-year-old before Callihan suffocated Erin to death.
Erin’s body was found a month later in a wooded area near Cox’s Mississippi home. Her older sister was discovered alive nearby and taken to safety. The property contained disturbing signs of possible human trafficking, including small animal cages.
Cox has been charged with capital murder in Mississippi and could still face the death penalty.
After his arrest, Callihan openly confessed to reporters, claiming he was sober at the time and blaming his actions on mental health struggles. He expressed a desire for lethal injection.
Callihan’s formal sentencing is set for November 19.
