President Donald Trump is intensifying his rhetoric on tackling crime in Washington, D.C., pledging swift action to “take our Capital BACK” even as Justice Department data shows crime in the city has dropped to a 30-year low.
In a series of Truth Social posts on Sunday, Trump warned the city’s homeless population they must “move out, IMMEDIATELY,” promising relocation “far from the Capital” while noting there will be “no Mr. Nice Guy” in his approach. He linked his plans to his administration’s recent success at the southern border, claiming crime removal would be “easier” and “happen very fast.”
Last month, Trump signed an executive order making it easier for cities to clear homeless encampments, a move criticized by advocates. His latest comments appear to signal a push to apply that order aggressively in the nation’s capital.
Trump also announced he will hold a press conference at the White House on Monday at 10 a.m. to address crime, cleanliness, and infrastructure in D.C. This comes alongside the Biden administration’s week-long initiative to boost federal law enforcement presence in the city.
D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser pushed back against Trump’s statements, calling comparisons to a “war-torn country” both “hyperbolic and false,” while emphasizing the federal government’s unique ability to help improve the District.
