The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has voiced its discontent with the unlawful detention of its leader, Nnamdi Kanu, stating that it can no longer tolerate the situation. Additionally, IPOB has expressed disappointment over the silence exhibited by prominent international bodies such as the United Nations (UN), European Union (EU), African Union (AU), and ECOWAS regarding Kanu's prolonged confinement.
In its statement, IPOB has accused the international community of remaining passive while Kanu's well-being deteriorates due to his extended solitary confinement. The organization, led by Mazi Nnamdi Okwuchukwu Kanu, has conveyed its dissatisfaction with the disregard shown by Nigeria towards both local and international laws pertaining to the unconditional release of their leader.
"We, the global movement and family of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), under the able leadership of Mazi Nnamdi Okwuchukwu Kanu, express our deep disappointment at the silence maintained by the United Nations (UN), European Union (EU), African Union (AU), and ECOWAS as Nigeria blatantly violates local and international legal frameworks, refusing to release our leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu," a statement from IPOB spokesperson Powerful reads in part.
Furthermore, IPOB has highlighted that Kanu's detention has been marked by unlawful acts contrary to both UN resolutions and Nigerian court orders. The organization emphasizes that for nearly two years, Kanu has been held illegally and unjustly, with his health deteriorating while in solitary confinement, a situation that has been largely ignored by the international community.
In drawing attention to the issue, IPOB aims to shed light on the actions of Justice Haruna Tsammani, who granted an order that prohibited the government from complying with the court of Appeal Judgment calling for Kanu's release, under the pretext of a stay of execution. IPOB questions the impartiality of Justice Tsammani, given his role as the chairperson of the panel for the presidential election petition tribunal in Nigeria, casting doubt on whether justice can be served in the country.
IPOB's call for international intervention is driven by its concerns for the welfare and human rights of Nnamdi Kanu, demanding that the global community take a proactive stance in addressing the situation. The organization urges the UN, EU, AU, and ECOWAS to uphold the principles of justice, fairness, and respect for human rights by exerting pressure on Nigeria to release Kanu, in accordance with both domestic and international legal obligations.
