The Simon Ekpa-led Biafra Republic Government In-Exile has issued a stern warning, declaring its intention to shut down Nigerian government offices across Biafraland. This move comes in response to what they perceive as ongoing mistreatment of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
In a statement released via his official channel on Tuesday, Ekpa, acting as the Prime Minister of BRGIE, expressed grave concerns over Kanu's health condition. Allegations made by Kanu’s lawyer, Aloy Ejimakor, indicated that Kanu was suffering from health issues including shortness of breath, low blood pressure, and general malaise. According to Ejimakor, despite Kanu's deteriorating health, the Department of State Services (DSS) has allegedly denied access to medical professionals.
Ekpa condemned the Nigerian government's handling of Kanu's case, suggesting that there may be ulterior motives behind his continued detention since June 2021. He stated, “Following this development, it is very clear that the Nigerian state does not want Mazi Nnamdi Kanu alive. And for this reason, the Biafra government is taking decisive measures to sanction Nigeria’s state.”
The statement outlined specific dates for the shutdown of Nigerian government facilities in Biafraland, targeting government secretariats, houses, local government institutions, and all other government offices. Ekpa emphasized, “If you know you are serving the Nigeria government as a civil servant in Biafraland, your premises will be shut.”
The planned shutdown is scheduled as follows:
- July 29, 2024: Total shutdown of government offices in Biafraland
- July 30, 2024: Total shutdown of government offices in Biafraland
- July 31, 2024: Total shutdown of government offices in Biafraland
- August 2, 2024: Complete lockdown of Biafraland
This move by the Ekpa-led Biafra Republic Government In-Exile underscores their ongoing protest against what they perceive as unjust treatment towards Nnamdi Kanu. The situation has heightened tensions in the region amidst ongoing concerns over civil unrest, including the periodic sit-at-home protests observed in the South-East.
The Biafra cause continues to resonate deeply within the region, despite legal and political challenges. The decision by Ekpa’s faction to enforce these measures reflects growing discontent and a firm stance against perceived injustices perpetrated against Kanu and the broader Biafran movement.
As developments unfold, stakeholders and observers are keenly watching the repercussions of these actions on regional stability and the broader socio-political landscape in Nigeria.
