Rivers High Court Issues Injunction Against PDP's Planned Congress

A Rivers High Court sitting in Port Harcourt has issued a temporary injunction halting the planned congress of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Rivers State. Presiding Judge, Justice Sobere Biambo, granted an interim injunction restraining the defendants from conducting the PDP congress scheduled for July 27th, or any other rescheduled date or location.

The court specifically barred officials including the PDP Nigeria, its National Chairman, Financial Secretary, Organizing Secretary, and their agents from proceeding with the congress until the case before the court is fully heard.

The plaintiffs in the case include Hon. Prince Solomon Abel Eke, a former local government official from Obio-Akpor, Hon. David Chinedu Omereri, Sodoye Tobin, Goddy Manfred Peplee, Akijah Precious Chigozirim, Hon. Orlosama Peter Amachree, Godfriday Nweke, Alfred Letam, Hon. Wechie Ndubisi Raymond, Mrs. Erebie Michael, and Hon. Ogenma Idalinimulu.

According to court documents, the defendants/respondents listed are the PDP itself, its National Chairman, National Financial Secretary, and National Organizing Secretary.

The court's order applies universally to all named defendants, their agents, servants, or anyone acting on their behalf. It further prohibits the PDP from making any decisions or issuing directives affecting the tenure of state, local government, and ward executive officers of the party in Rivers State.

The case has been adjourned to July 19, 2024, for further consideration of the motion on notice that has already been submitted.

This development comes amidst allegations that supporters of Nyesom Wike, the Minister of Federal Capital Territory, have allegedly dominated the leadership positions of the party's Caretaker Committees, excluding those aligned with Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
