On Tuesday, an Upper Area Court in Kubwa, Abuja, mandated Mr. Awwal Abubakar to return his two children to their mother, Aisha Atsu, by July 24.
Judge Mohammed Wakili issued the order following Atsu's complaint that Abubakar had taken their children to Kogi without her consent. Atsu, who divorced Abubakar in September 2023, explained that she had left the children, ages nine and six, with their father in Dutse Alhaji, Abuja, while she traveled for Sallah.
"My former husband took our children to his mother's village in Kogi, outside the court’s jurisdiction," Atsu said. "I want the court to order him to return the children to Abuja so they can sit for their school examinations. Additionally, I request that the court direct Abubakar to contribute to their upkeep."
In response, Abubakar claimed that Atsu was not fit to raise their children and stated that he had witnesses to support his assertion.
