The International Testing Agency (ITA) announced on Saturday the provisional suspension of Nigerian lightweight boxer Cynthia Ogunsemilore after she tested positive for a banned substance. The suspension comes just before her scheduled opening fight at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
Ogunsemilore, a Commonwealth Games bronze medallist and African Games champion, tested positive for furosemide, a diuretic listed on the World Anti-Doping Agency’s (WADA) prohibited substances list. The positive result was detected during an out-of-competition doping control conducted on Thursday.
The ITA has stated that Ogunsemilore is now provisionally suspended and will be barred from competing, training, or engaging in any activities related to the Olympics until the matter is resolved. This suspension aligns with the World Anti-Doping Code and International Olympic Committee (IOC) Anti-Doping Rules.
The boxer has the option to challenge the provisional suspension through the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) – Anti-Doping Division and may also request an analysis of her B-sample.
Ogunsemilore was set to compete against Taiwan’s Wu Shih Yi in the round of 16 on Tuesday. The suspension casts uncertainty over her participation in the upcoming bout and her future in the competition.
