The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested Darius Ishaku, former governor of Taraba State, over allegations of misappropriating N9.3 billion. Ishaku is currently being held at the EFCC's Abuja office, with the commission confirming his arrest, though further details have not been disclosed.
The EFCC has filed a 15-count charge against Ishaku at the Federal High Court in Abuja. He is set to be arraigned alongside Bello Yero, former permanent secretary of the Bureau for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs. The charges include criminal breach of trust and misappropriation of state funds, which violate Section 315 of the Penal Code Act, Cap 532, Laws of the Federal Capital Territory of Nigeria.
Among the key allegations, Ishaku is accused of misappropriating N1.1 billion from contingency funds belonging to the Bureau of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs between August 2015 and March 2016, as well as diverting another N1.1 billion for personal use. Other alleged misappropriations include N193 million, N650 million, and N170 million between 2019 and 2021.
Additionally, Ishaku is accused of diverting N3.3 billion and N639.4 million between July 2019 and February 2021. Other charges include the diversion of N993 million and N90 million from 2015 to 2021. Specifically, Ishaku faces charges for allegedly diverting N23 million and N761.3 million between October 2016 and January 2018.
Ishaku, who governed Taraba State from 2015 to 2023, was previously invited for questioning by the EFCC in July 2023 regarding financial concerns during his tenure. After his initial questioning, he was released on bail.
