Justin Johnson, one of the men convicted in the 2021 murder of rapper Young Dolph, has been sentenced to life in prison. The verdict was announced on Thursday, September 26, after Johnson was found guilty of first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit first-degree murder, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
Young Dolph, whose real name was Adolph Robert Thornton Jr., was shot and killed at the age of 36 outside Makeda’s Butter Cookies in Memphis on November 17, 2021. After almost four hours of jury deliberation, Johnson was convicted on all charges.
During the trial, co-defendant Cornelius Smith testified that he and Johnson were each offered $40,000 to kill the rapper. Smith identified Hernandez Govan as the person who orchestrated the attack, claiming he was following orders from Anthony Mims, also known as Big Jook, who is the brother of Memphis rapper Yo Gotti. Mims was allegedly supposed to pay Govan $10,000 for the murder but was shot and killed in January, with no arrests made in connection to his death.
Following the sentencing, Young Dolph's sister, Carlissa Thornton, shared her thoughts with the media. She expressed her gratitude to the jury for their decision, stating, "On November 17, 2021, our lives changed forever." She highlighted the impact of her brother’s death, saying, "Titles that have now left a missing piece in the lives of so many." Thornton asked the public to remember her brother not just for the tragedy but for the positive person he was, emphasizing his role as a father, businessman, and philanthropist.
