Fishermen in Yauri town, Kebbi State, have killed a hippopotamus and distributed its meat among villagers. The incident occurred on Monday, October 7, following the directive of the state governor, enforced by the Emir of Yauri, Zayyanu Abdullahi. This action was taken after the animal reportedly killed one of the emir’s staff members.
According to AIT News, the hippopotamus was hunted down by a group of 40 fishermen armed with bows and arrows. After an extensive search, the animal was successfully put down.
Videos circulating on social media show the moment the hippopotamus was killed and transported in a local dugout canoe to the Palace of the District Head of Gungu, Kasimu Aliyu. At the palace, the animal was slaughtered, and its meat was distributed to the villagers.
The killing has attracted attention on social media, with many discussing the circumstances that led to the order and the community’s response.
