The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has issued a statement regarding a viral video depicting a confrontation between airport officials and a woman at Murtala Mohammed International Airport. In the video, the unidentified woman is seen accusing the airport staff of demanding a fee of N5,000 to clear her luggage. She expressed her frustration, questioning why she was being charged as a passenger.
The incident sparked widespread criticism online, with many Nigerians accusing the airport staff of corruption and misconduct.
However, in a statement released on October 8, FAAN clarified that the woman involved was not a passenger but rather a cargo agent engaged in unauthorized operations at the airport. The agency explained that she refused to pay the required fees for cargo handling and exhibited disruptive behavior, which included damaging equipment and straining airport resources.
FAAN emphasized that there was no molestation or bribery involved in the situation, labeling the woman's actions as an attempt at blackmail. The agency highlighted that their staff was merely enforcing the proper payment of fees.
In its statement, FAAN reminded cargo agents and the public that cargo operations must occur in designated areas, utilizing appropriate vehicles and personnel while adhering to established charges. The N5,000 fine is imposed on non-compliant cargo operations for reasons including the failure to use designated terminals and damage to airport facilities caused by improper handling.
The agency reaffirmed its commitment to transparent operations and urged the public to follow airport regulations to prevent future disputes.
