A 36-year-old surfer, Giulia Manfrini, tragically lost her life in a freak accident after being impaled by a swordfish while surfing off the coast of Indonesia. The incident occurred on Masokut Island, a popular destination for surfers located near Sumatra.
According to witnesses, Manfrini was riding a wave when a swordfish suddenly leapt out of the water and struck her in the chest. Nearby surfers, Massimo Ferro and Alexandre Ribas, rushed to assist her but were unable to save her. Manfrini sustained a deep, five-centimeter stab wound to the left side of her chest and was transported to a local health clinic, where she sadly passed away.
Tributes have poured in on Manfrini's Instagram account, with one message reading, "The sea, that gave you so much, has taken your life. Rest in peace." Another follower wrote, "I just heard the dreadful news. RIP."
Manfrini, originally from Venaria Reale, Italy, had a background in law, following in the footsteps of her father, a lawyer, and her mother, a general practitioner. After working as a snowboarding coach, she discovered a passion for surfing and relocated to Bali, where she became a surfing instructor.
The mayor of her hometown, Fabio Giulivi, expressed his condolences, stating, "The entire community offers its heartfelt sympathy to her family. The news of her passing has shocked us all, and we feel powerless in the face of such a premature loss."
Authorities have arranged for Manfrini's body to be transported by boat to Padang before repatriating her remains to Italy.
