Meta Fires Employees for Misusing Meal Credits Amid Layoffs

Meta, the parent company of Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram, has terminated approximately two dozen employees at its Los Angeles office for misusing company meal credits. Reports indicate that these employees purchased non-food items such as laundry detergent, wine glasses, and acne treatment pads with the meal vouchers.

Meta provides its larger corporate offices with extensive food services, offering free meals to employees. However, employees at smaller offices without these services receive meal vouchers worth $20 for breakfast and $25 each for lunch and dinner to order food while on duty. An internal investigation revealed that some Los Angeles employees violated this policy by using the meal funds for unauthorized purchases or having meals delivered to their homes.

These firings occurred last week and coincide with Meta's announcement that it is laying off staff across the company as part of broader restructuring efforts. "Today, a few teams at Meta are making changes to ensure resources are aligned with their long-term strategic goals and location strategy," stated Meta spokesperson Tracy Clayton. She added that the company is working to find other opportunities for employees whose roles are eliminated.

While Meta did not disclose the exact number of layoffs, the cuts affected various divisions, including Instagram, WhatsApp, Facebook, and Reality Labs, which oversees Meta's virtual reality and metaverse projects. Last year, Meta laid off over 20,000 employees in multiple rounds of cuts as part of an effort to address declining revenues and stagnant user growth, a period that CEO Mark Zuckerberg referred to as the "year of efficiency." Despite these challenges, Meta's stock has risen nearly 80% compared to last year.
